The Unofficial Arsenal Blog
It’s that time again for my predictions for this weeks Premier league games and I can surely only do better than my dismal performance last week. I got one perfect result, two correct outcomes and seven wrong outcomes in a week where Chelsea, Arsenal, “Manure” and Liverpool all failed to win.
Wigan v Wolves
This is Saturday’s early game and it’s a game that I have no intention of watching whatsoever. Wigan are a hard team to predict as they are so up and down but at least they try to play football the right way.
Wolves on the other hand seem to have become the team that are kicking their way through the league this season and I have to hope that it doesn’t work for them. As a result I’m going to predict a rare win for Wigan.
Birmingham v Everton
Birmingham have only lost one of their six games so far but they have only won one as well which makes them the draw kings yet again.
Everton on the other hand are rooted to the bottom of the table without a win in six games and they need to get a win very soon before their season ends before it has started. I have a sneaking suspicion Everton will get their first win and it’s about time too.
Stoke v Blackburn
Stoke RFC are not exactly a joy to watch but their come from behind victory away to Newcastle last week was a very important win for them. They have conceded first in every league game they have played this season but they also have a very good home record.
Blackburn play a similar game to Stoke and their away form is fairly poor so they can’t expect to get too much from this game. Don’t expect to see too much of the ball on the ground in this game and set pieces will be crucial. I think Stoke will shade it.
Sunderland v Man Utd
Sunderland seem to be able to get results against the better teams in the league and put in performances to earn those results. However their problems seem to come against the smaller teams so it’s lucky for them that they have “Manure” this week. They deserved to beat Liverpool last week and only some very poor refereeing prevented them from getting that result.
On the other hand “Manure” have failed to win any of their three away league games so far and have conceded seven goals in those games. They have however scored seven goals in those three draws and I think we can expect a few goals today. I think both teams will continue their current records and it will end up all square.
Tottenham v Aston Villa
The Spuds won their Champions league game during the week with the help of a referee who gave them three penalties and they will have to recover quickly for this game which is less than three days later. It’s an interesting test for a team who have wanted to play at this level and are now ready to find out how difficult it is.
Aston Villa managed to beat Wolves with the help of some generous refereeing last week and it moved them up to fifth in the table despite the fact that they don’t seem to be playing particularly well. This will be a big test for Villa too and it’s one I think they can get a point from.
West Brom v Bolton
West Brom’s had a thoroughly deserved win at Arsenal last week and it’s a reward for a team that try to play football the way it should be played. They find themselves in sixth place in the league despite losing their first game 6-0 to Chelsea and a win will push them further up the table.
Bolton are gradually trying to change their style under Coyle but when the going gets tough they invariably go back to what they are best at and kick their opponents. They will fancy their chances here but I think West Brom will get a draw to stay in the upper regions of the league.
West Ham v Fulham
West Ham managed to get their first win of the season at home to the Spuds last week and it moved them off the bottom of the table. They will be happy to be at home again and they will be hoping to make it two wins in a row. Their confidence is growing and they are playing better now as well so they have a good chance of getting that win.
Fulham are unbeaten but they have drawn five of their six games and they need a few wins to push themselves further up the table. They are playing pretty well despite all their strikers being injured and I think they will get a draw out of this game as well.
Man City v Newcastle (1330 BST)
Man City drew with Juventus on Thursday night after beating Chelsea last Saturday and they will be hoping to continue their form against a Newcastle team that they should beat as long as they don’t underestimate them.
Newcastle took the lead against Stoke last week and they couldn’t hold it which was a very bad result for them. They will have their work cut out in this game and I think they will struggle. I’m predicting a win for City.
Liverpool v Blackpool
Liverpool fans told me their points total would improve when they started playing the smaller teams as they called them. They would have considered a home tie against Sunderland as one of those games but still they failed to win it last week and indeed they were lucky to get a draw. Their opponents in this game are a team that they just have to beat or they will be in a real crisis.
Blackpool have been a pleasure to watch this season and they have been very competitive against all but the top teams so far. Arsenal and Chelsea both beat them very well and Liverpool will have to beat them with some style if they are to be taken seriously at all. I just don’t think Liverpool are set up to win games by a large margin but I do think they will win.
Chelsea v Arsenal
Chelsea lost their 100% record in the league to Man City last week and they will be looking to put that right against an Arsenal team that they have found it easy to beat in recent seasons. Drogba loves playing and scoring against Arsenal and if he is on his game Chelsea will expect to win again.
Arsenal were very poor in losing to West Brom last week and they slipped back to third place as a result. If they lose this one they will slip even further down the table and it’s not something they want to happen. A lot will depend on whether Cesc Fabregas can recover from his injury and how Arsenal cope with Drogba as well. As an Arsenal fan I always predict a win for them and this is no different as I am predicting a 2-1 win for Arsenal as long as they can play the game with the right focus and tempo and get at Chelsea’s suspect defence.
That’s it for this week and with an international break coming up it will be another two weeks before my next attempt to prove how knowledgeable I am about football and to fail miserably yet again.
Until the next time.
